“Are you ready?” Klaus asked finally. “No,” Sunny answered.
“Me neither,” Violet said “but if we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives. Let’s go.”
~ From the book The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket
This is BRILLIANT and I just love it!
What are you waiting for?
What are any of us waiting for?
These are the questions in which our lives burn.
Day by day. Hour by hour. Minute by minute.
The present turns into the past and is burning away and lost forever right in front of us while we wait for…something.
We wait for someone or something to magically appear, or come along, or change in our lives, and make everything better.
It’s the root of why people spend BILLIONS of wasted dollars every year trying to win the lottery.
We are waiting instead of doing.
Looking for that something, or that someone, or that once-in-billion chance, to make meaningful change in our lives.
When all along “it” is right in front of us waiting for us to take action.
(I am starting to think we all watched too many Disney fairy tales as kids.)
And the problem is that we put so much emphasis on what other people think about our ideas…
…and so much weight on the things (fill in the blank) that are keeping us from getting started…
…and we lend so much power to our fear of judgement by others…
…and we are SOOO afraid of failing…
…and so many other blah di blah di blah reasons….
(Yes, I just typed out the words…blah di blah di blah…).
We also believe what we’ve been told–about ourselves and about what is possible.
“You are “crazy” to start your own business.” This generally said lightheartedly but in the back of your mind, you wonder “Maybe I am crazy.”
“You should go to college and get a good paying job.” This said I think by every parent of our generation because who doesn’t want to be able to buy an iPhone or live in a huge house?
“You are too ‘old’ to run, you’ll destroy your knees.” This usually said by the person who is always complaining about their weight or needing to exercise more.
“You should do this…”
“You shouldn’t do that…”
Blah di blah di blah.
Personally, I can tell you I listened to this type of thing for YEARS without realizing how much it was affecting me.
I believed this crap for a long time.
Well, guess what? I finally stopped waiting.
I stopped waiting for people to cheer me on. People to believe in me. People to lift me up and people to support me.
Because you know what? For the most part, most people–while they think they are lifting us up and supporting us–are really just trying to hold us back.
Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t doing this vindictively.
They are going through the same “waiting game” and seeing us transform…really, more feeling us transform…makes them uncomfortable and makes them realize they aren’t taking action and, well, it’s frustrating.
We are much more comfortable when surrounded by people who are waiting like we are. Because people who are actually taking action make us realize that we want to take action too but aren’t.
I don’t even think the vast majority of people realize it when this happens.
And this is why, when we try to make meaningful change or do something transformative, we feel uncomfortable. It’s the same feeling I just described but it’s even worse because we’re feeling it about ourselves and it’s magnified by our own doubts, fears, and worry.
I also stopped waiting for some magical catalyst. And I stopped waiting for that fear, doubt, and worry to go away.
Because there is a constant but invisible grey line of doubt that is always there. A constant and not-so-silent fear hanging over us all.
So my message to you today is to stop waiting.
Stop waiting for the perfect day. No such thing.
Stop waiting for that something. It might come but the chances are very low.
Stop waiting for the right teacher. You’ve met them a million times already. You even listened. But you didn’t do.
Stop waiting for the raise, or worse, the lottery. Everyone thinks money is the answer but I can tell you from experience that as soon as you stop making it about money, the money you need starts to come.
- for more sleep
- for your dreams to come true
- for an apology
- a thank you
- more sleep (oh did I say that?)
- for all the answers to the questions
- for soemone to help
- for someone else to do it
Because if you keep waiting, time will burn away and one day you’ll realize you waited your life away.
If you stop waiting, we all stop waiting for you to show up and shine and to be this BRILLIANT light that you are.
Because you are STUNNING…you are MAGIC…and YOU are the reason WHY I stopped waiting.
You ARE Possible. Now GO GET IT!
