In many articles on this site involving essential oils, we talk about using fractionated coconut oil–generally in context to the application of essential oils to your skin. This is often because certain oils are so powerful in their pure form that dilution is required to avoid any sensitivity reactions that you might have when applying to your skin.
But what is fractionated coconut oil exactly? I get this question a lot so I thought I’d write a brief article on what it is and why to use it.
What is Fractionated Coconut Oil?
Fractionated Coconut Oil is an absorbent and light carrier oil that will help to increase essential oil distribution while leaving skin feeling smooth and soft. It is derived from virgin coconut which is solid at room temperature.
Fractionated coconut oil, also called “liquid coconut oil,” is a form of virgin coconut oil that has had the long-chain fatty acids removed via hydrolysis and steam distillation. This process leaves mainly the medium-chain triglycerides and makes it an absolutely saturated oil. Just this one change makes the oil liquid at room temperature, and extends the product’s shelf life significantly and greatly increases its stability.
Once the long-chain fatty acids are gone (which have some great health benefits, which is why virgin coconut oil is widely used as well), you’re still left with a lot of good stuff, including medium chain fatty acids like those mentioned above–capric and caprylic–as well as myristic acid and palmitic acid, all of which retain their super-moisturizing capabilities. You also still have the natural antioxidants, which protect from premature aging, and nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, which help maintain collagen production.
Benefits of Fractionated Coconut Oil
Fractionated coconut oil is completely soluble with other oils, which makes it the perfect carrier oil, capable of ushering other oils into the skin.
It’s also extremely light, and absorbs quickly into the skin without clogging pores. You’re left with a soft, smooth feeling that won’t exacerbate oiliness or leave you feeling greasy.
- Softens and soothes dry skin
- Natural emollient to increase essential oil distribution
- Odorless and colorless for easy blending with any essential oil
How to Use Fractionated Coconut Oil
Fractionated Coconut Oil is completely soluble with all essential oils and is colorless, odorless, and will not stain.
Use as a light carrier oil for topical applications of therapeutic-grade essential oils. Dilute one part essential oil to five parts or more of Fractionated Coconut Oil depending on skin sensitivity, or as directed on essential oil label. Can also be used to help minimize sensitive skin reactions to essential oils by applying directly to affected area.
- Used commonly in soaps, ointments, lotions, hair cair products, and costmetics.
- Used as a carrier oil since it facilitates the absorption of essential oils when applying them externally.
- Apply topically to hydrate skin without interfering with your perfume or essential oil blends.
- Mix with calming oils and massage into neck and shoulders for deeper relaxation.
- Often used in cooking as it does not go rancid easily and is very stable.
- Dilute stronger oils with coconut oil before applying topically to lessen sensitivity.
